| I. Design & Pre-Press Preparation |
1. Prepare Design File |
Prepare the complete color printing artwork file for the sticker (CMYK mode). |
| |
2. Create the "Foiling Black Plate" |
This is the core step. Independently create a vector file (AI file) where all areas designated for hot stamping (gold/silver) are precisely filled with K100% pure black (this black solid area dictates the future location of the metallic foil transfer). |
| |
3. Select Sticker Material |
Traditional hot stamping is best suited for porous materials like coated paper and wood-free paper. Using non-porous materials like synthetic paper or transparent stickers can cause clouding or bubbling with large-area stamping due to trapped heat and requires careful assessment. |
| II. Platemaking & Printing |
4. Make Printing Plates |
Create traditional printing plates for the color printed areas (if applicable). |
| |
5. Create the "Stamping Die" |
Based on the black artwork (K100%), engrave a metal relief plate (the stamping die, typically made of zinc, magnesium, or copper). The artwork must be engraved in mirror image to stamp the correct orientation onto the sticker. |
| |
6. Color Printing |
Proceed with color printing on the sticker face stock. Note that stamping areas should not heavily overlap with color inks. |
| III. Foiling Process |
7. Mount and Heat the Die |
Mount the engraved stamping die onto the hot stamping machine and preheat it to the specified temperature (approx. 100∘C to 150∘C). |
| |
8. Foil Transfer |
Place the hot stamping foil (electroplated aluminum foil) between the sticker and the heated die. The die applies high heat and pressure. The metallic layer is released from its carrier film and adheres firmly to the substrate in a fraction of a second. |
| |
9. Waste Foil Removal |
The remaining carrier film (waste foil) is removed, leaving the gold/silver design on the sticker. |
| IV. Post-Press & Finished Product |
10. Surface Protection (Lamination) |
Decide on the lamination method, which affects durability: • Laminate First, Then Stamp (Common): Stamping is on top of the film. • Stamp First, Then Laminate (Under-Film Stamping): The foil is sealed under the film, significantly increasing scratch resistance, waterproofing, and oil resistance. Recommended for high-oil products like cosmetics or essential oils. |
| |
11. Cutting and Die-Cutting |
Perform precise half-cuts (kiss-cuts) or full-cuts according to the design. |
| |
12. Quality Check and Dispatch |
Check the registration of the stamping, metallic gloss quality, cutting accuracy, and package for delivery. |
